BEIRUT (IQNA) – A Lebanese scholar stressed that Islamic philosophy is basically a Quranic philosophy.

Lebanese scholar Tarad Kanj Hamadah

Speaking to IQNA on the occasion of World Philosophy, Professor Tarad Kanj Hamadah said Islamic philosophy was initiated with contemplation on the verses of the Quran that teach us to reflect on the existence.

The Holy Quran, which is a book that offers an integrated system for guiding humanity, encourages us to use the intellect to discover the truth, he stated.

Muslim philosophers were interested in theology but they also added new questions to those raised in Greek philosophy, he noted.

It was Muslim philosophers who conveyed Greek philosophy to Western Europe and initiated new philosophical schools such as Masha, Hikam al-Ishraq and Hikma al-Mutaaliya, said Hamadah, who has a PhD in philosophy from Sorbonne University in France.

He referred to his works on Mulla Sadra, an Iranian philosopher who introduced Hikma al-Mutaaliya, and said in those works, he has proven that Islamic philosophy is essentially a Quranic one and that Hikma al-Mutaaliya is based on the Quran and Hadiths from Ahl-ul-Bayt (AS).

Elsewhere in his remarks, the Lebanese scholar said Islamic philosophy is regaining its credible status in the world today.

He added that Islamic circles and academic centers are paying more attention to studying and teaching philosophy more than before and creative works are being produced about philosophical issues in the Muslim world today.

Celebrated on the third Thursday of November every year, World Philosophy Day is a UNESCO initiative to highlight the importance of the discipline.

UNESCO first created World Philosophy Day in 2002, when it was celebrated on the 21 November.
